Hi, this piece is made by the Johnson Brothers in England. It is a large bowl measuring 12" diameter and 4 1/4 deep. It has been around for as long as I can remember and brings back wonderful memories. It was only used once a year on Halloween when my parents filled it up with candy to give out. However, it usually had to be refilled before the trick-or-treaters arrived because we all took a few pieces every time we walked by it. I'm hoping to get clarification from collectors. All the back stamps I've seen are different than mine so I'm having a difficult time finding the year it was made in. I also would like to know what the green 8 means, if anything.
These were specifically made for the North American market, with a series of different scenes, you have the covered bridge, but the Friendly Village is the pattern name. They have been reproduced by Johnson Brothers in recent years, and they used a very similar mark. The originals date from the late 1950’s -60’s I believe. The pattern was printed on then they were hand coloured, so the number I think, was the either the painters number or a batch number. The most common piece are the cups & saucers, so the bowl may be rarer. Check replacements.com
