      One way of attaching pearls to jewellery, particularly pearl stud earrings, is with a post. Sounds like this one broke off.

      Ok thanks cameo I was thinking maybe part of a pair of earrings that had a pearl or more hanging from it, but I guess this could be used again in some way,it also seems real I think.
