Thi box belonged to my mother and I think she had said it came off a ship. Maybe holding some sort of compass. It is 9" X9" X 9". Nice tonuge and grove corners.
Any toughts?

A marine chronometer case??

It Is a chronometer case and it should have an inner box also. They housed a gimbaled ship's clock.
