Wrought iron item with a hook sticking out of it, a round "loop" and a flattened metal, finger sized rolled loop with a flat metal extension facing the top. Has a pointed end that looks like it has been hot at some time. I have no idea what this was used for? Found in an old historic townsite in Idaho that burned to the ground in the 1800's. Anybody?
This item is called a "Sticking Tommy" and was used to hold candles that would be driven into a post or timber frame. Where you are from it was likely used in old time mining.
Thanks you so much! It was really baffling. I will drive it into a post on our porch and put a candle in it. Was the "hook" used to hang two other candles from their joined wick?
I think the hook on the side was just another option for hanging or to carry it. They can be worth a bit to the right collector seeing them go for 20$ to 60$ but I like your idea better. Great conversation piece and brings a little "Deadwood & Klondike" to your porch.
